Dined here for a impromptu birthday lunch since my husband surprised me by coming back home early. He had gotten there over 30 minutes earlier than me so he talked to the staff about having a little birthday dessert for me. We ordered a platter, everything was great on there and the portions were just right for the two of us. After we finished with our platter they immediately brought us our bill and my husband started to look nervous. After 15 minutes of waiting they finally came up with the birthday "cake". Now I don't want to sound ungrateful but I know my husband was rather disappointed, it was a smashed blob of chocolate with my name written as if a 2 year old who is working on their motor skills wrote it. We had a good laugh about it but as we were leaving the restaurant the waitress rudely stops us and tells us we didn't complete the bill. We look and they gave us a whole new receipt and added the gross blobby cake to it for a whopping 700ksh. My husband didn't want to make a fuss so he just paid and we left. What a total buzzkill and rude, unorganized staff. As I said my husband had informed them of the cake in the very beginning and yet that's how they presented it, late and so gross looking. Though he did make a good point, Ocean Basket is just a fast food place in Jo'burg where he used to live, so we shouldn't have had high expectations. You'd think for the "classy" look they are going for they'd at least have classier service. Not sure I'll be back just on sheer principle, and the fact that a bad taste was left in my mouth from the service after eating the good food.
A very friendly, homely environment. The food was great; portions were just enough.
Ocean Basket is my top notch, seafood restaurant I've been there thrice and I must say the ambience, the service and the food were satisfactory!!!
I had sushi the second time I was there and manner!! Was I shell-fish with my sushi *pun intended *
Before we tried we were scared since we believed in the misconception that all sushi is raw, until that very day I'll never forget lol
best sea food restaurant in town and pocket friendly too
Had lunch there on the Sunday after it opened and the place was mobbed. I think this was probably the worst and most chaotic service I've experienced in a long time- if not ever! Food was nice though, tasty mussels and prawn cocktail skewers, delicious calamari 3 ways, but a bit naughty that it was served with what's known as 'broken rice' which is the cheapest of the cheap. Went back for lunch a second time 10 days later to try the oysters and sushi. Service was a bit better and our waitress was trying very hard. They finally had the wine list, but the choice of whites is not very good for a fish restaurant. Didn't much like the flavour or the texture of oysters, but loved the seared salmon salad, also tried the spicy salmon maki which were nice, but very spicy indeed. There was still building work going on, so lots of hammering and banging and a strong smell of glue to accompany our meal Not in a hurry to go back a third time...
