Happy to read ONE objective review on that TERRIBLE restaurant - by far the worst food experience I have had in Nairobi and probably the worst Japanese restaurant I have been to. I went to Cheka with some friends after we checked TA and Eatout reviews... Big mistake, most of them being clearly fake, as you can imagine from the neutral style and repetitions from one review to another. I had also been told that the chef was an authentic Japanese chef, which is not so common in Japanese restaurants. Promising? Deceiving, like the reviews. In short: chemical mayonnaise hidden in your maki, chicken teriyaki without teriyaki, terrible tofu (yes!), overcooked rice, tasteless sake, too much garlic on the seared beef and half of the fish "not available, sorry"... It is sad, as the place looks nice (the bar especially) but the chef and management are clearly here to make money. Cherry on the pie: the check... easily 20% more expensive than other Japanese restaurants in Nairobi. The ultimate food experience: after Cheka, you can make it anywhere!
Nairobi is full of great Japanese restaurants, but this is not one of them. It is the worst dinner I have had in Nairobi. My friends and I left feeling we had been conned. None of the 8 dishes we ordered was edible, we had to send back 2 of our main meals and had to go to another restaurant for dessert to forget the bad taste in our mouths. The maki rolls are full of mayonnaise, the sashimi is as tough as an old shoe, the chicken teryaki has no taste of teryaki but full of chicken skin, and the vegetable pancakes are inundated by a sauce that would ruin any dish. The service is as bad as the food. If you like Japanese food then avoid this restaurant. It feels like a team of con artists have decided to steal your money and thank you with a smile as you are leaving. Nairobi has no shortage of good restaurants, so just go somewhere else!
From the ambiance to the food everything was amazing,i loved the tonkatsu and the fried sardine truly authentic japanese food...Cheka is simply a 5 star for me!!!
Great authentic main courses. Service was ok apart from the waitress not understanding what we had ordered on one order but generally good and very attentive. Main courses were much better than the starters, next time would probably go straight for main
My friend made me visit the restaurant because he had seen a Japanese chef.Well, It was not a disappointment. The place has a serene environment especially if you’re visiting during lunchtime the interiors are really cool. I have tried a lot of Japanese cuisines but I liked their pork ginger and fried squid. Nice place for late lunch and dinner with family
